Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Coatings for Medical Applications

Choosing the appropriate coating for your application can be a daunting task. Among other considerations, manufacturers contemplating coating the surface of a device or component must consider the hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties of the coating. The manner in which coated surfaces respond to fluids may be material to how the finished device performs. In fact the purpose of the coating itself might be to specifically control device hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity.

  • Hydrophobic vs. hydrophilic coatings, and examples of applications that may benefit from one of these coatings.
  • HYDAK® hydrophilic coatings for medical devices are lubricious, abrasion resistant, non-thombogenic, and biocompatible. Suitable for coating vascular catheters, guide wires and other medical devices, they can be applied to a wide range of polymeric and metallic substrates.
  • Parylene conformal coatings are ultra-thin and biocompatible, and offer excellent moisture, chemical and dielectric barrier protection to a wide range of medical devices and components. Parylene coatings also improve the lubricity of components and reduce surface tack.

Neither coating is useful in all situations, so knowing how these coatings are used will facilitate choosing the one that is right for a given application.
