Cutting tools for medical implants

Recent ISO-9000-certified cutting tools that target medical-implant manufacturing include those for turning, grooving, parting, threading, milling, and drilling. The tools from Iscar Metals Inc., Arlington, Texas, (iscar.com) are intended for cutting silicon, titanium, exotic metals, and stainless steel. These materials are often used in arm joints, periarticular plates, dental components, and intramedullary nails. Tools include solid carbide endmills for high-speed thread milling, inserts for Swiss-type automatics and CNC lathes, and solid carbide bars for minimum bore diameters of 4 mm. An upgraded Do-Grip line of inserts for grooving and parting high-temperature alloys has a coolant hole through the insert with an outlet near the cutting edge. This cools the tool internally and keeps the chip away from the cutting edge. Iscar says the coolant-delivery method decreases cratering rates for longer tool life.
