Designing Professional Packages

One way to produce professional packaging prototypes in less than a day is with the Packaging Prototyping System, says Roland DGA Corp., Irvine, Calif., (www.rolanddga.com). The system uses a Roland LPX-1200 3D laser scanner to scan objects up to 5×8 in. for a 0.0039 in. scanning resolution. Its reverse engineering software is compatible with all 3D CAD software. A Roland MDX-40 3D-milling machine has a work volume of 12×12×4.12 in. A fourth rotary axis allows unattended two and four-sided milling, bundled 4-axis CAM software, and a high-speed 15,000 rpm spindle. What's more, a Roland Soljet PRO II 54-in. wide integrated printer and cutter has a maximum print speed of 315 ft2/hr at 450×360 dpi, and up to 1,440×1,440-dpi resolution. It prints on uncoated and coated media.
