Disposable syringe makes injections safer

The Confidose injector from West Pharmaceutical Services Inc. , Lionville, PA, (westpharma.com) can deliver up to one milliliter of a liquid drug from a standard 1-ml prefilled syringe. The syringe can be glass or Daikyo Crystal Zenith. The one-time-use device is then disposed of properly, meaning there is little chance of contamination to the patient, and no possibility of the next patient being cross-infected or getting a contaminated dose. A window lets the person giving the injection check to see if the proper drug is in the syringe, and drug companies can deliver pre-filled syringes with labels declaring what is inside. Patients and healthcare staff are also protected against needlestick injuries because the short, half needle the device uses does not extend outside of the protective tube until the button is pushed. It then quickly retracts.
