Making packages smaller

Flex circuits give designers an almost unlimited freedom to size packaging geometry, while retaining the precision density and repeatability of printed circuits. Flex-Coils from Minco, Minneapolis, Minn., (minco.com) target implantable medical devices and high-precision position sensing. The devices combine flexible or rigid-flex circuits and antenna coils in one rugged unit. Flex-Coils with wire as small as AWG 50 allow high sensitivity in a flat laminated unit. An etched coil for a total thickness of less than 0.010 in. is also available. Polyimide insulation provides high dielectric strength, flexibility, and protection for the antenna. Flex-Coils come in round, rectangular, oval, or custom shapes.
