Biopsy cups illustrate the part complexity capabilities of MIM

The technology isn’t new, but its level of sophistication and acceptance is fast growing.  Since its commercialization in the mid-1970s, metal injection molding (MIM), which combines powder metallurgy and thermoplastic injection molding, has become a leading manufacturing method for many medical-device OEMs, says Ted A. Tomlin, technology advisor, FloMet LLC, Deland, FL. Whether MIM is the right choice depends a great deal on part complexity and tooling costs, Tomlin writes in Medical Design magazine.
