RF welded products company teams with device maker on breakthrough IV sleeve

The StedLine IV sleeve is a stabilizing device that eliminates the need for glue or tape to secure an intravenous line to skin. Device maker, Vancouver, WA-based REDpointe, had as its goal the elimination of PVC, while keeping the product cost-efficient, safe, and patient-friendly.

Certain PVCs can leach DEHP, which has been found to cause organ damage in animals, according to the American Medical Association. The US FDA has advised healthcare providers to reduce DEHP exposure for certain vulnerable populations, including infants and other patients receiving multiple medical treatments.

REDpoint partnered with Indianapolis-based Genesis Plastics Welding, a contract manufacturer of radio-frequency (RF) welded products that led REDpoint to lower-cost PE and PET materials for single-use medical products such as the IV sleeve, yet robust enough to provide the desired product strength. Genesis’ ecoGenesis RF welding technology provides the welds needed to achieve stability.

The REDpoint StedLine IV Sleeve is acquiring distribution within the disposable medical device arena. The sleeve has proven beneficial for elderly and pediatric patients, as it absorbs yanks and tugs that commonly cause IV catheters to fail.
