Rough With a Waterjet, not an EDM
MC Machinery Systems Inc., Wood Dale, IL, (www.mitsubishi-world.com) says its Waterjet line reduces production times by rough cutting material before parts get finished on EDMs. According to the company, roughing with a Waterjet instead of an EDM cut the time usually spent on one project by 28%.
Waterjets come in three different models. The 2 to 3 axis Classica, for example, features 2D CAD/CAM software with nesting capabilities, and has an accuracy and repeatability of ±0.004 in. Software in the 4-axis Suprema features Intelligent Tapering Control, which corrects tapering of the cut while the machine is cutting. Lastly, the 5-axis Evolution 3D System uses a self-positioning point device on the material that maintains a constant distance from the nozzle to the workpiece. This protects the nozzle through a range from flat work to a contoured interpolation of ±69 in.
