Heat-free machining of medical implants

The UltraLight thermal laser machining process by Norman Noble (nnoble.com), Highland Heights, OH, can be used to accomplish precise features in parts made of bioabsorbable polymers, shape memory metals, and other alloys without producing any heat affected zone (HAZ). This absence of an HAZ results in the elimination of costly deburring and other post-processing steps, while increasing product quality and yield. Applications include the machining of vascular stents, drug delivery systems, catheter devices, valves, and needles.

“A laser system capable of cutting the tightest, most intricate geometry through virtually any material without generating any thermal damage to the material was once unimaginable to most design engineers,” said Normal Noble Vice President Chris Noble.
