Smart NC Cuts Time From Cycles

Clever techniques manage cutting-tool motion for significantly higher material removal rates says TrueMill software developer Surfware Inc., Westlake Village, Calif. (surfware.com). The NC software controls tool engagement with more aggressive machining parameters that shorten cycle times. “It's a new way to machine,” says Glenn Coleman, vice president of product design at Surfware. “The techniques generate smooth, fluid tool paths, which make better use of modern machine-tool capabilities. Material removal is much faster, more efficient, and puts less stress on cutting tools and machines.” Toolpaths produced by TrueMill do not have spikes or sudden changes in tool load. Thus, machining parameters such as spindle speed, feed rate, depth-of-cut, and stepover can be used in combinations that would damage material or tools if used with other tool-path generators.
