Special Mill Cuts Titanium Faster

Machining a titanium synovial cavity for an artificial hip joint took Stryker Orthopedics in Ireland (stryker.com) 13.4 min/piece using a lathe and milling machine. To speed things up, the company replaced these with a Jabro 4-mm diameter, three-flute, solid-carbide end mill from Seco, Warren, Mich., (secotools.com). This boosted cutting speed from 108 to almost 450 ft/min and tool life from 500 to 1,800 parts per cutting edge, which slashed machining time per piece to nine minutes while holding even better tolerances. The cutting tools come with customer drawing number, a serial number, and dimensional data. This helps Stryker quickly program the CNC. The data also provides traceability for each tool.
