Brazilian medtech sets sights on Top 5 worldwide
Brazil holds the distinction of being the second largest emerging country (behind China) in terms of medical equipment sales revenues, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and according to ABIMO (The Brazilian Association of Medical Devices Manufacturers) President Franco Pallamolla, Brazil, will soon take its place among global medtech leaders.
“Our objective,” says Pallamolla, “is to be one of the five largest producers of high and medium technological density products by 2020.”
As part of Brazil’s expansion, ABIMO, in partnership with Apex-Brasil (the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), will launch the Brazilian Health Devices campaign at the MEDICA medical/hospital trade fair, Nov 16 to 19, in Düsseldorf, Germany.
ABIMO’s objective is to expand its global presence beyond the 180 countries in which its products are currently sold and to increase US export sales from $633 million in 2010 to $1 billion by 2015.
In order for Brazil to sustain its momentum in medtech, ABIMO forecasts for 2011 that the Brazilian medtech industry will apply 3.3% of revenues “to the development and updating of technology.”
