Recognizing that the unique nature of silicone as a material puts it in a category on its own, the Medical Silicone Conference will take place March 22–23 at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis. Introduced last year with successful programs in Minneapolis in March and in Anaheim in November, and sponsored again by Medical Design, the conference promises to bring insights and a wealth of information together in one location. It will feature presentations by leading industry experts on material, processing, and design topics specific to medical device OEMs. Two special keynote sessions will address critical issues—including the challenges of national and international politics, regulation, new technologies, policy change, new market emergence, and more—facing medical device manufacturers.

“We’re excited to be back at what is our anchor location for the Medical Silicone Conference series,” says Publisher Bill Rodman. “As we continue to bring a vibrant speaker line-up and top-notch solution providers to our attendees each spring and fall, we’ve made Minneapolis ‘home base’ for the spring event, with the fall MSC to move around and take the show on the road to other pockets of medical device innovation hungry to hone their knowledge of how to leverage this unique material.”

The following pages contain important information on the session topics, speakers, and sponsors. These sessions provide a targeted opportunity to learn of the latest advances. To register, go to www.medicalsiliconeconference.com. There you can also find more details on the schedule of events, exhibits, and special pricing for medical device OEMs.

GENERAL SESSIONS: Day 1

Top 10 Tips for Designing Successful Silicone Medical Components
Rohit Tandon, Vice President Operations and Bob Bies, Business Development Manager, Scientific Molding Corp, Somerset, WI
As silicone components become increasingly popular in medical devices, the need to understand the nuances of designing for silicone needs to be better understood. This session will discuss emerging trends in designing parts, thinner walls, combination parts (twoshot) with other materials, form, fit, and function, and designing complex contoured parts for best results. In addition, the tips will discuss how to select the right material, taking into consideration the use of the silicone part; the importance of quality; and what to look for in suppliers.

Integrating Silicone Parts into Medical Device Assemblies
David Wolgemuth, Senior LSR Engineer, Phillips Plas t ics MS
LSR Facility, Hudson, WI This presentation will cover integrat ing silicone parts into medical device assemblies for robust products. It will start by examining an assembly or product design issue, followed by a walk-through the design considerations, materials selection, and tooling allowances for two-shot molding with LSR. The speaker will show some initial part designs, followed by a look at the design changes with each modification for the required tweak or allowance.
