RP Machine Builds Custom Titanium Implants

Rapid manufacturing equipment that builds prototypes and functional parts by electron beam melting will be distributed by Stratasys Inc., a rapid-prototyping system supplier in Minneapolis (stratasys.com). The machine is designed and manufactured by Arcam in Sweden (arcam.com). It relies on an electron beam to melt and fuse layers of powdered titanium. “The process is five times more efficient than competitive laser-based metal-fabrication methods,” says Stratasys CEO Scott Crump. Target markets include medical implants, aerospace, and automotive.
