Tech Spotlight: Inspection/Measurement

VISION-BASED INSTRUMENT FOR MICRON MEASUREMENTS
The Vision Inspector Benchmark rapidly captures and measures complete part details with micron accuracies. Users simply place a part on the Benchmark table and click a button to image and measure the part. The device compares the part to its CAD model or to a qualified artifact and precisely identifies out-of-spec features. The machine produces detailed reports for customers or for quality control and compliance records. The Benchmark can be used for first-article inspection, spot checking, or even 100% parts inspection.

Portable measurement "arm"
The FARO Edge is a portable measurement arm that lets manufacturers easily verify product quality by performing inspections, tool certifications, CAD-to-part analysis, and reverse engineering via touch probing. A new Laser Line Probe attachment lets the Edge also perform laser scanning. The Edge features a built-in touchscreen and on-board operating system for stand-alone basic measurement capability. (A laptop is no longer needed.) The Edge comes in three working volumes and has seven axes of rotation. Additional enhancements include: Bluetooth, WiFi, USB, and Ethernet connectivity and improved sensors that warn against excessive external loads, correct for thermal variations, and detect possible setup problems.

No-drift gaging device
The ACANTO Absolute Length Gage works with the company's ND 2100G GAGE-CHEK, which provides the metrology readouts. Together, the units suit fixed gaging applications. The Absolute Length Gage uses an optical encoder so quality managers need not worry about gages drifting, linearity over the entire measuring range, or referencing on startup. The ACANTO comes in both spring-operated and pneumatically operated models and 12mm or 30mm measuring lengths.

The ND 2100G GAGE-CHEK handles gaging and inspection tasks from simple pass/fail tests to complex checks via the PLC. The device can measure dimensions such as thickness, flatness, and volume. The GAGE-CHEK features a color, LED-based display that shows results numerically or graphically as a bar graph or dial indicator. The GAGE-CHEK can save thousands of data entry points for internal statistical process control (SPC) or export. Min/Max functions monitor and store data, and users can set warning and tolerance limits.

Lab adds ISO 80369-1 testing
DDL Inc announces the expansion of its capabilities with the addition of ISO 80369-1 testing. According to ISO, this new procedure specifies general requirements for small-bore connectors, which convey liquids or gases in healthcare applications. The small-bore connectors are used in medical devices or accessories intended for use with a patient.

"The timeline for the official introduction of ISO 80369-2 through -7 has not yet been defined," says Mark Francis, DDL's Product & Material Lab Manager.  "However, medical device manufactures should be aware that ISO 80369-1 Annex B, is an FDA recognized standard and, as such, MDM’s will be held to this standard."

To further help MDM's reach the appropriate level of FDA compliance, DDL has purchased an axial/torsion testing system. With this and its experience in testing per ISO 594, the facility is fully prepared to test to ISO 80369-1.
