Tech Spotlight – Filters & IV Components

All-in-one filter and seal

A custom-designed combination of elastomer and fabric seal operates as both a seal and a filter in one device. The Apple Rubber Products’ FilterSeal is designed to meet the unique specifications of any application and is available in all typical elastomer materials, including silicone and Viton, as well as a wide choice of filter materials such as PTFE membrane, nylon, Dacron, and more. The seal simplifies component design, allowing it to seal and filter with one part instead of two or more. According to the company, the design results in cost and time savings and makes them ideal for automatic assembly. The company can provide complete engineering support, manufacturing, quality assurance, and a Class 10,000, ISO Class 7–certified cleanroom. The company also offers silicone to organic rubber seals, engineered plastic parts to TPE soft feel overmolds, and micromiature custom solutions. Also available is a full line of parts and sealing solutions including o-rings, micro o-rings, face seals, housing seals, filter seals, and custom and unusual shapes. Validation testing for cytotoxicity or bioburden testing is also available.

Animal-free polypropylene tube fittings

Value Plastics has increased its USP Class VI-certified, animal-free polypropylene offering tenfold since its first introduction in 2006. In the past 12 months alone, the company has almost doubled the size of this line. This expansion can be attributed to multiple factors. The original demand was triggered by the outbreak of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy or mad cow disease). To avoid the risk of contamination, biopharmaceutical companies began to seek out tallow-free resins.  Because polypropylene is a widely used resin for flexible tube fittings, the company says its animal-free polypropylene significantly reduces BSE-related paperwork by reducing the documentation requirement for fittings made with this material. In addition, animal-free resins have become a more affordable option for the medical device industry. The company has an additional 15 to 20 parts in the pipeline, further expanding this product line.
