12-mm motor runs at 13,800 rpm

Series 1224 SR dc motors (12-mm dia., 24-mm long) combine the company's ironless rotor and neodymium rare-earth magnets for a stall torque of 5.43 mNm and speeds to 13,800 rpm. Precious-metal commutation lets it run at low-starting voltages due to inherent low contact resistance. The 1.5-mm dia. motor shaft ensures high rotational stability and a black housing facilitates heat dissipation. Combining a motor with a gearhead and encoder provides a miniature dc-drive system. Planetary, spur, and zero-backlash gearheads come in 10 and 12-mm diameters with various reduction ratios for output torques to 300 mNm.

An alternative to ball screws

A precision Roller Pinion System (RPS) provides an alternative to precision ball screws. This technology converts rotary motion into precise, backlash-free linear motion, while operating at high speeds over long distances. The RPS features a patented tooth, and includes a pinion supported by roller bearings that move smoothly along the face of each tooth, giving the RPS better performance and longer life than traditional rack-and-pinion or ball screw systems. Using rack segments, a system can cover any distance. RPS maintains accurate positioning at speeds to 36 ft/sec. Even at such high speed, the low-friction design creates no heat or wear on components, ensuring long life and low maintenance.

Bus coupler provides transition to EtherCat

The BK1120 bus coupler lets companies add any of the over 200 distributed I/Os from Beckhoff Automation's KL family to its high speed EtherCAT systems. The BK1120 provides a path for next- generation industrial Ethernet while offering complete backwards compatibility with existing Beckhoff I/O systems. Separate nodes of traditional KL I/O terminals and ultra high speed EL I/O terminals with built-in EtherCAT communication can now be networked together for greater flexibility. The unit works well in highly distributed applications because it is possible to extend Ethernet cable lengths to 100 m between individual nodes. High transmission speed and synchronicity let EtherCAT deliver industry-leading I/O processing times and control capabilities. The coupler allows communication to 1,000 distributed I/Os in 30 μs, and almost unlimited network size.

RoHS-compliant chassis keeps electronics cool

A second generation AdvancedTCA system has a chassis intended for full NEBS compliance. To meet the cooling demands of ATCA applications with 200 to 250 W/slot, the developer has optimized the cooling of its new 13U and RoHS-compliant chassis. Thermal simulation and tests show it has at least 20 to 30% airflow in each of the four regions of the ATCA blade. The chassis is cooled by three individually removable fan trays. Each tray has two 250 to 420 cfm fans with pulse width modulation control. A honeycomb air filter below the fans maximizes air intake while a NEBS-compliant air filter above the fans ensures even air distribution. The fans are also positioned to send up to 140 cfm airflow over the rear transition modules.
