Design Solutions: ultrafiltration cartridges
Ultrafiltration cartridge for chemistry analyzers
BioPak C disposable ultrafiltration cartridges minimize alkaline phosphatase (ALP) released by bacteria that may be present in immunoassay and clinical analyzer feed water. CLSI Clinical Laboratory Reagent Water can degrade quickly when standing in tubing and reservoirs during downtime, increasing bacterial counts and releasing ALP. This can interfere with some biochemical assays, resulting in inconsistent blanks or the need for more frequent decontamination and calibration. When attached to any Millipore AFS or Elix Clinical water purification system as a final purification step, the Millipore BioPak C filter will deliver ALP-free water with bacteria levels lower than 10 cfu/mL (typically less than 1 cfu/mL).

Power strips also control
IPV42/70 series Intelligent Power Controllers are available in 42 and 70-in. vertical power strips. The power distribution series provides individual on-off-reboot control to 24 ac power receptacles. This device allows remote power monitoring of both voltage and current. The current is also displayed on a local two digit current meter. The optional environmental sensor kit lets the device read temperature and humidity. Additional inputs allow connecting switches to sense door closures, airflow, and many other closure-based monitoring devices. Control and monitoring is accomplished via Ethernet (TCP/IP) or Serial (RS232) connections.
The network interface is accessed with a Web browser, telnet, or with SNMP management software. The software interface is customizable allowing for unit naming, outlet naming, sensor naming, and multiple user logins.

Brushless dc micromotors
A family of Pittman brushless dc servomotors combines patented coil-winding geometry in a slotless motor design to deliver more power using less energy. These “micromotors” are well suited to medical instruments, dental drills, and hand power tools. All models in the product line benefit from patented Parallex winding geometry for maximum high efficiency. High-energy NdFeB rare earth magnets enhance performance, and stainless-steel housings resist corrosion. Precision ABEC bearings and balanced rotors give smooth and quiet operation.
There are five series: Size 05, 08, 11, 14, and 18. The smallest (Size 05 Series) performs with no vibration at the highest speeds and the heavy-duty motor can be engineered for application-specific performance and efficiency. Sizes range from 0.500 to 1.750-in., speeds to 44,525 rpm, and continuous torque to 42.6 oz-in. depending on model.

Electrical metallic tubing conduit
Stainless steel electrical metallic tubing (EMT) conduit is one of several new product releases in the Calbrite line of UL-listed and compliant stainless steel conduit, fittings, and accessories. The thinner walled EMT conduit is used in applications subject to less danger from wear and tear and environmental hazards such as forklift traffic, hand trucks, and carts. Stainless steel EMT conduit is less costly than rigid conduit but still offers the benefits of stainless steel, including superior performance in corrosive environments and applications subject to harsh chemical treatments or washdowns. EMT stainless steel also bends easily for fabrication and installation.

Stainless-steel pressure sensor works in foul places
A wet-wet differential pressure sensor, the DP86, can reduce measurement errors in fluid flow. The DP86 is a double-sided, media compatible, piezoresistive silicon pressure sensor packaged in 316L stainless steel, which makes it suitable for use in liquids and corrosive environments. The advantage of using a differential pressure sensor instead of two-gage sensors for measuring fluid flow is that accuracy is always specified as a percentage of the sensor's full-scale reading. A differential-pressure sensor reading can be smaller, thereby reducing measurement error. The unit has an O-ring mounting, with silicone oil transferring pressure from the stainless-steel diaphragm to the sensing element. It comes in a low-pressure model (0 to 5 psid) and six ranges from 0 to 15, up to 0 to 500 psid.

The MX rodless band cylinder may outlast all others. The life claim comes from a range of features such as three bearing options. The Profiled Rail design uses THK Caged Ball technology to reduce friction and extend actuator life. It reduces stress concentrations by 59% for best performance. A permanently lubed internal bearing works well in vertical applications. Durable stainless-steel bands, another feature, withstand effects of high-speed impacts but will not expand as nonmetallic bands do, providing a reliable seal over the actuator's life. A bearing isolates the piston from applied loads and remains isolated even when the carrier deflects, which extends piston seal life. The piston bracket and carrier are single piece extrusions to reduce failure points. Other features include durable polyurethane seals, clear anodized-aluminum extrusions, adjustable cushions, mounted shocks, double or single-end porting, drop-in and easy to locate switches, and tube clamps. A valve for dispensing UV resins
The DV509-UV-LF diaphragm action valve is intended for dispensing UV resins and adhesives. The wetted chamber is compatible for low to medium viscosity UV materials. The valve is rated at 200 cycles/min. A diaphragm seal attached to a solenoid opens on an air signal from an I&J Fisnar valve controller. The diaphragm flexes to allow fluid to exit for the duration that the seal is opened. A return spring snaps the diaphragm shut after the air signal is removed. Natural sunlight radiates UV rays, so the resin must be protected in the valve. Some UV resins are also anaerobic and are sensitive to metal contact, not sufficient to polymerize but enough to gel.
