Products seen at MD&M West

Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) West in Anaheim ran January 10 to 12 and attracted over 1,100 exhibitors. The show is held annually to showcase products and services from suppliers of CAD/CAM/PDM software, automation technology, e-business software and systems, motion control and sensors, contract manufacturing, and electronics. MD&M West had over 14,000 attendees from top manufacturing companies. The following items are a few of the hundreds introduced in Anaheim. The show (mdmwest.com) returns next January 31 to February 2.

Liquid injection molding

A molder of liquid-injection-silicon parts says its electric molding machines can control the clamp cycle so parts come out flash free. Several other advantages of the process include a curing system that uses platinum for faster cycle times than traditional peroxide-cure systems used in conventional rubber molding, which may lead to haziness and yellowing of the part. LIM materials are easy to color with a wide range of choices compared to solid silicones. And low viscosity means LIM materials easily fill thin and complicated geometry yielding better parts compared to convention silicon-rubber materials.

Dot pattern adhesive for direct-skin contact

The MACdots coating system lays down adhesive in a dot formation on the liner, instead of the full gum layer of adhesive. Each pressure-sensitive adhesive can be tailored for a specific application based on adhesion, breathability, and pattern. The coatings use an acrylic-based, hypoallergenic, skin-friendly adhesive and patterns can be coated onto a variety of flexible face materials, including polyester non-wovens (white and flesh colored), nylon non-wovens and highly-breathable polyurethane.

How to inspect and measure small parts

A Quick Image 2D noncontacting video measurement system uses a telecentric lens for a wider field of view and greater depth of focus than conventional methods. It requires less focusing effort and that translates into error suppression and increased speed for higher measuring throughput. The image system measures work pieces of varying thickness and levels and can focus simultaneously on numerous features found on items such as tool edges, things conventional video systems normally find difficult to measure. The device is selectable for high or low-magnification depending on a required field of view and level of detail.

A range of materials

Dow Corning displayed a range of materials with benefits that come from their silicone base. For example, BIO-PSA brand adhesives give optimum skin adhesion and do not generate or contain unwanted by-products that can irritate the skin. Silicone rubber and elastomeric material from the developer are used in medical devices and veterinary applications. The materials are used in all U.S. and European regulatory classifications as excipients for implants and inserts, and in other applications that benefit from consistent high quality and purity. Tubing is used in a wide range of applications including medical device, pharmaceutical processing, laboratory, veterinary, and pharmaceutical drug delivery systems.

Embedded ICs make connectors smarter

A Smart connector system seamlessly integrated into cabling and connectors links minimally invasive surgical (MIS) and diagnostic equipment generators to surgical hand pieces, patient electrodes, and transducers — instruments that are the business end of MIS equipment. Smart devices can often provide the only competitive advantage that OEMs have in today's commodity-driven MIS market. The proprietary and patented Smart Connector technology uses PC board mass-production technology to embed ICs into connectors. This adds intelligence into the OEM device connectors, yet lowers costs due to PC technology's mass-production techniques thereby eliminating costly hand soldering, hand assembly, and high rejection rates of conventional connectors and cabling products.

Nonmagnetic connectors for MRI environments

A range of high-performance non-magnetic connectors is ready for use in MRI environments where magnetic properties of connector components can obscure the results of MRI scans. The standard magnetic field strength of MRIs is typically 0.5 to 3 Tesla (T), and research equipment ranges up to 10T. As field strengths increase, the magnetic properties of the components within the imaging volume become more critical to the system. Magnetic components used at the MR Coil will cast a shadow obscuring the image and affecting the quality of the analysis. Depending on how close the connector is to the imaging volume, devices will require varying degrees of non-magnetic behavior. D, N, and L series connectors can be customized as well as the recent HyperGrip series, in non-magnetic styles.

Dispenser works with speed and precision

The DispenseJet DJ-9000 assists constructing assemblies for medical devices and biotech products through precise, high-speed delivery of a wide variety of fluids, including UV-cure adhesives, encapsulates, conductive epoxies, and under fills. Fluid exits the nozzle in a 100-micrometer-dia. stream, letting the machine jet into tight spaces as small as 200 micrometers. Dot diameters can be down to 0.33 mm and shot volumes down to 3.6 nl. Features include high flow rates over 120 mg/sec (for under fill materials), high spot rates to 200 dots/sec, less height sensing required, and it needs no backtracking to prevent fluid stringing.

No-backlash, no-maintenance helical couplings

A product brochure for flexible couplings details the variety of materials, coil configurations, bore diameters, and attachment methods available for the Helical line. Helical couplings compensate for shaft misalignment and work at high speed transmitting high torque at a constant velocity. The units have no backlash, need no maintenance, and come in aluminum or stainless steel. The couplings are machined from single pieces of homogenous high-strength material into helical (curved beam) configurations which eliminate elastomeric elements such as rubber bushings, spiders, rubber discs and pads.

Hybrid linear actuator

The compact Size 8 hybrid external linear actuator measures 21-mm square, and replaces four different components — a motor, coupling, leadscrew, and nut. A rotating Acme stainless-steel leadscrew is incorporated into the motor rotor, eliminating the need for shaft to leadscrew couplers. Available resolutions are 0.0015 to 0.04 mm per full step, which deliver thrusts up to 10 lb. While the standard Size 8 has 4 in. of visible leadscrew, leadscrew length, coil termination, and the external nut can be customized to fit application requirements. The leadscrew's mating nut translates along the screw, so as the motor steps, the leadscrew rotates but does not advance. For long leadscrew lengths, the screw end can be machined to allow the use of out-board bearing supports. The actuator is suitable for applications requiring precision positioning and rapid motion, including medical equipment, X-Y tables, instrumentation, automation, and valve control.
