Adsorbent filter streamlines manufacturing

Adsorbent filter by W.L. Gore & Associates, Newark, DE, provides an integrated filtration solution that simplifies medical-device manufacturing without compromising product performance. The activated carbon media and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membrane are an effective combination for adsorption, high airflow, and liquid resistance.  Cost reductions are due to the following:

• Avoidance of capital investment in equipment and operating expenses for filter assembly, including raw material and filter scrap.

• Decreased manufacturing and quality assurance overhead.

• Simpler filter integration processes and equipment because of a peel-and-stick method.

• Streamlining of supply chain and consolidation of supplier base.

The adsorbent filters fulfill one of Gore’s core values: fitness for use.  That is, products that meet specific customer needs and requirements. One of Gore’s core values is to develop products based on the specific need of our customers and the requirements of their device, a value they call fitness for use.

“In working with medical device manufacturers,” says Tom Quincy, Gore’s North American medical filtration product manager, “we found they were using complicated processes to produce filter subassemblies. Universally, production groups wanted a combined product. In the end, we developed a product to meet the needs of a broad customer base.”
