Design Team Finds Solution to Latex Problems

Swapping a polyisoprene seal for a potentially harmful and under-performing latex version in a laparoscopic instrument let engineers solve several problems with the device. The instrument's manufacturer worked with engineers at Jefferson Rubber Works, Worcester, Mass., (jeffersonrubber.com) to develop an alternative to latex.

An original seal on the laparoscope failed to maintain the proper air pressure required to complete a procedure. In addition, nitrosamines in standard latex were causing topical allergic reactions in patients. Nitrosamines are carcinogenic compounds produced from nitrites and amines found in common latex products. Jefferson engineers worked with the manufacturer to design the polyisoprene seal thereby removing the harmful compounds and improving physical properties of the device.
