Impact-resistant laminate outperforms others
A high-durability grade of 3D laminate called Kydex HD surpasses high-pressure laminates, melamines, and rigid thermofoils in resistance to surface and edge impact. The sheet grade from Kleerdex Co. LLC, Bloomsburg, Pa., (kydex.com), was developed for membrane pressing and flat laminating of routed MDF components intended for horizontal and vertical surfaces.
The thinnest gauge of Kydex sheet (0.022in.) allows for more accurate reproductions of intricate profiles, fine details, a corporate identity, and other 3D shapes routed into MDF substrates.
The material comes in 12 stock and over 3,000-custom colors, all of which are blended in making severe gouges or scratches penetrating the surface less conspicuous. The sheet is also available in woodgrain and granite patterns, integral granites and metallics, as well as heavy-gauge integral colors.
The material carries a Class 1/A fire rating and resists harsh cleansers and repeated cleaning without staining or fading. It seamlessly encapsulates all top and side surfaces of the substrate, including undercut edges, compound curves, flat expanses, sharp edges, rounded corners, and wire management holes routed completely through the substrate. The end result resembles components machined from solid materials while minimizing “thin-out“ in deep recesses and on outside corners.
