Relaunched TPUs are for implantables

A new raw material component is an important part of the relaunched line of Carbothane thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) for implantable devices by Lubrizol Corp, Cleveland.  The specification of the new replacement raw material – a polycarbonate diol – was necessary due to a supply shutdown. The products formulated with the new raw material meet existing Carbothane TPU criteria and have passed the biocompatibility testing performed. Carbothane TPUs are a family of aliphatic, polycarbonate-based materials available in a wide range of durometers and colors. Lubrizol sourced with an alternate supplier of the polycarbonate diol and achieved material formulations with the same chemical properties. The relaunched Carbothane TPU line includes a total of 13 clear with 20% barium-sulfate loaded grades in five durometer hardnesses ranging from 75A to 72D. The products are suitable for injection molding and extrusion. Custom colors are available.
