Resin holds up to autoclaving and chemical cleaning
The Polysteribox sterilization and transport container uses a new Ultem polyetherimide (PEI) healthcare resin grade from SABIC Innovative Plastics.
A German manufacturer of labware and medical products makes its Polysteribox sterilization and transport container with the new Ultem polyetherimide (PEI) healthcare grade resin from SABIC Innovative Plastics, Pittsfield, MA. SABIC developed the special grade of its Ultem resin to meet the company’s need to comply with tougher standards.
The Ultem resin meets ISO10993 for biocompatibility and maintains its high performance and attractive, transparent appearance even after 1,000 cycles of chemical cleaning at a PH of 12 or 13 and 1,000 cycles of autoclaving at temperatures of up to 148ºC. The material features high stiffness, ductility, compressive strength, colorability, and transparency to see inside without opening the container.
Additionally, the new resin grade lets the Polysteribox withstand repeated cleanings using harsh, alkaline chemicals. In addition, it lets the autoclave vacuum sterilization temperature be successfully raised to 134 Cº. High temperatures destroy such pathogens as bovine spongiform encephalopathy and they shorten total autoclave time to 20 minutes (versus 30 minutes at the previous temperature of 121 Cº).
