Micromolded Parts Have Tight Tolerances

Micromolded parts smaller than 0.003 in.3 are available in engineering-grade plastic resins and materials (including implantables and MEMS) and many metals. Phillips Plastics Corp., Menomonie, Wisc., (phillipsplastics.com), says it has developed a proprietary process that handles lots sizes from prototype quantities and low-volume production to several million pieces/year. The process reportedly yields a larger percentage of finished parts as compared to conventional molding and has high cavity-to-cavity repeatability. Depending on part geometry, tolerances can be held to ±0.0005 in.
