Ford in lead for in-car healthcare

By Joe Jancsurak, Editor

Ford, Microsoft, Healthrageous, and BlueMetal Architects announced earlier this month an alliance to develop technologies for the mobile health and wellness monitoring/maintenance. The alliance was unveiled during the “Doctor in Your Car” keynote address at the Digital Health Summit at the International CES in Las Vegas.

The announcement comes just seven months after Ford held a media event at its Dearborn headquarters to trumpet collaborative efforts with Medtronic (continuous glucose monitoring system), SDI Health (informational asthma and allergy system, and WellDoc (mobile health integrated services). For more on the May announcement, click "Coming soon: Cars that care about your health."

“People are spending more time in their cars, and with the tremendous growth in mobile healthcare solutions, Ford is dedicated to understanding the value of being able to connect to health and wellness-related services while driving,” said Gary Strumolo, manager of Infotainment, Interiors, Health and Wellness at Ford Research and Innovation. “Our connectivity platform – Ford SYNC – provides easy, voice-controlled access to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, and therefore it makes sense to research areas that are important to our customers.”

Powerful feedback

The introduction of Balluff’s IP67 intelligent power supplies with Heartbeat technology by Balluff allows maintenance crews to get reliable feedback on the real-time and long-term status of the supply and to be able to predict the replacement and maintenance cycle of the supply. Such feedback is unusual as most power supplies for industrial use do not provide feedback on their long-term health. A faulty or dying power supply can cause maintenance crews hours of production time in troubleshooting and repair.
