Study confirms device tax could cost jobs, stifle innovation

The medical device tax, if implemented, could cost tens of thousands of jobs, almost double the industry’s total taxes, raise the effective tax rate to among the highest in the world, and harm US competiveness, according to a study released today by AdvaMed. Industry insiders have made this claim since the tax was first proposed. This study now puts some teeth into the talk.

The new study, “Employment Effects of the New Excise Tax on the Medical Device Industry,” by Manhattan Institute senior fellow Diana Furchtgott-Roth and Hudson Institute senior fellow Harold Furchtgott-Roth, outlines a number of economic harms likely to result from the tax.

“The effect of the tax on earnings of US companies is likely to be significant,” say the study authors. The industry directly employs about 400,000 Americans, and the study concludes that the device tax puts 43,000 of those jobs at risk, with a corresponding loss in wages of more than $3.5 billion.

Marshall Manufacturing repositions precision machining services to include design assistance

Marshall Manufacturing has repositioned its precision machining services to accommodate a growing need from medical OEMs that increasingly outsource engineering and design assistance responsibility as they downsize their in-house engineering departments.

Responding to these changes, the company has repositioned itself as an integrated precision services solution provider. This includes a broadened spectrum of design for manufacturability (DFM), including design engineering assistance, prototyping, device validation implementation, and precision manufacturing.

Marshall’s medical specialty is the process design and manufacturing of high-precision Swiss machined components, machined needles, 2D and 3D contouring, and bending of machined wire and tubes. End-use products include urethral needles for sling implants, trocars, surgical tools and spine implants.

Swiss turning center

A new Swiss turning center added by MicroGroup machines medical parts down to 0.030 in. (0.762mm) in diameter and in length, in tolerances of ±0.0002 in. The Tornos 7 machine brings to 20 the number of Swiss turning centers in production at the company and allows machining of miniaturized parts utilized increasingly in advanced surgical instruments and medical implants, according to the company. Unlike conventional computer aided machining (CAM) in which the entire part is exposed while being turned, Swiss turning feeds the material through the collet variably, allowing tools to machine the part immediately adjacent to the collet, reducing deflection and improving dimensional tolerances significantly.
