NI hardware and software builds a better bioreactor
PBS Biotech Inc, Camarillo, CA, used hardware and software from National Instruments (NI), Austin, TX, in the design of a line of bioreactors — devices for the cultivation of mammalian cell cultures to produce cell-derived vaccines and pharmaceuticals. Bioreactors must precisely isolate a culture from potential microbial contamination and keep cells suspended in the culture medium, as well as control parameters such as pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen levels. The new devices were designed to be compact, modular units that included both the culture chamber and a built-in controller.

Smartphone technology tracks pharmaceuticals
Smartphone technology from Complete Inspection Systems lets manufacturers and end users scan 2D codes printed on pharmaceutical packages. The Mi6 codes include advanced security features and work with the developer's online product-tracking service. Singapore: What's new in medical R&D and manufacturing
The Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), Singapore, says significant developments have taken place recently in R&D and manufacturing in the country. For example, Pfizer has expanded its nutrition manufacturing plant, making it among the largest worldwide. In addition, GlaxoSmithKline and EDB announced the first eight projects to be funded under the U.S. $24 million GSK-Singapore Partnership for Green & Sustainable Manufacturing.
