Former Vice President Dick Cheney was there to share his own cardio care experience during a one-on-one with NBC’s Robert Bazell, as was GE CEO and the president’s “jobs czar,” Jeff Immelt, who came to discuss the global economy and the medtech biz in a one-one-one with CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo. But one of the surprise show-stoppers at the Cleveland Clinic’s Medical Innovation Summit on “State of the Heart Cardiovascular Technologies” held two weeks ago was named Watson, as in IBM’s Watson. You know, the supercomputer named after IBM founder Thomas J. Watson that recently beat two Jeopardy champions on national TV.

Choosing an RTOS for Remote-care Medical Devices
Three trends are driving a dramatic increase in the number and diversity of remote-care medical devices entering the market: aging populations in industrialized countries, pressures to reduce health care costs, and a new focus on primary and secondary care. Download this free whitepaper on choosing an embedded OS for remote-care medical devices. It provides a high-level list of requirements that device manufacturers can use to evaluate OSs they are considering. www.qnx.com
A collaboration involving Basel, Switzerland-based Straumann and St. Paul, MN-based 3M ESPE has resulted in the launch of Lava Ultimate Restorative, a resin nano ceramic (RNC) for dental that combines nano ceramic components with a highly cross-linked resin matrix. When cured, the material mimics the translucency and fluorescence of natural teeth, and because of its strength, the material can be used to produce complete restorations in a single piece, rather than in multiple layers, and is also for thin, minimally invasive, restorations. In contrast to ceramics, RNC does not require firing and is particularly suitable for final adjustment and polishing.
