Polls reflect industry concerns

By Joe Jancsurak, Editor

FDA and to a slightly less extent, AdvaMed, are not effectively representing industry concerns over the 510(k) product review process. These are some of the findings of this past year’s MedicalDesign.com Reader Polls.

Grant awarded to develop biodegradable implants

The National Science Foundation awarded a $175,000 grant for research aimed at developing biodegradable medical implant materials that would promote tissue regeneration and disappear after serving their functions in the body. The grant will allow Huinan Liu, an assistant professor of bioengineering in the Bourns College of Engineering at the University of California, Riverside, to continue for two years her research on using magnesium-based alloys in medical implants.

New Tech Brief on High Precision Linear Stages
High precision linear stages used for applications such as surface measurement or precise optical positioning often require two distinctly different modes of motion: A rapid mode combined with a high accuracy mode. Until recently, equipment engineers seeking to incorporate dual speed motion had only one option – stack one stage atop another. However, now there’s a promising new development that controls dual speed motion with a single stage configuration. This paper describes both types of positioning system configurations and compares them according to the extent to which they satisfy design requirements for velocity, range of motion, and compactness. News from Medical Design

Register now for timely webinar on antimicrobial technologies
With Medicare no longer reimbursing healthcare facilities for the costs of treating certain preventable infections, hospitals are increasingly focusing on comprehensive infection control strategies to protect patients and bottom lines. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that one out of 20 hospitalized patients will acquire an infection while receiving healthcare treatment for other conditions. And as you read this, healthcare-associated infections are causing significant death and illness among patients treated in US healthcare institutions while adding billions of dollars to healthcare costs. With the emergence of drug-resistant infections and new pathogens in health care settings, new strategies to detect and reduce health care-associated infections are more critical than ever. And device manufacturers have a great opportunity to differentiate themselves and meet the market need through devices that incorporate antimicrobial technologies.

In order to seize this important opportunity, you and your company need to be aware of the additives, coatings, and materials that can help combat microbe formation and prevent infection. So register today for Medical Design’s live Webinar, Antimicrobial Technologies: Controlling Healthcare-Acquired Infections, sponsored by Bluestar Silicones, EJ BioMed and Evonik Industries and set for Wednesday, December 14, 2 pm ET.
