Study paints a grim picture of the future of medical device innovation in America: Is FDA to blame?

US patients wait on average a full two years longer than their European counterparts for many lifesaving and life-enhancing technologies made by US medical device and diagnostics companies because of growing regulatory delays and inefficiencies, according to a new study. And while there is some controversy as to whether the study represents a true picture of the problem, it highlights some recurring themes and attempts to quantify what has been up to now only anecdotal reports.

Survey: Home medical devices would improve patients’ health

The majority of US patients support the use of home medical devices to manage and improve their chronic conditions according to a survey conducted by GfK Roper for Practice Fusion, San Francisco. Practice Fusion is a free, Web-based electronic health record (EHR) company.

Medrad receives prestigious Baldrige Award—again; faces yearend layoffs due to Bayer restructure

Medrad Inc, a business of Bayer HealthCare, joined an elite group of only five companies that have received the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award more than once. The 2010 Baldrige Award for excellence in manufacturing is the top honor a U.S. company can achieve for performance excellence. The manufacturer of computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and interventional cardiology products also received the award in 2003. On the heels of the announcement, the award-winning company also learned that as part of a restructuring plan at Bayer, it will likely have to lay off an unspecified number of employees by yearend.
