US patients wait on average a full two years longer than their European counterparts for many lifesaving and life-enhancing technologies made by US medical device and diagnostics companies because of growing regulatory delays and inefficiencies, according to a new study. And while there is some controversy as to whether the study represents a true picture of the problem, it highlights some recurring themes and attempts to quantify what has been up to now only anecdotal reports.

As 2010 comes to a close, the major players in the cardio market are making strategic mergers and acquisitions to position themselves in new markets. Among those just announced are Medtronic’s acquisition of Ardian, St. Jude Medical’s acquisition of AGA Medical, and Boston Scientific’s acquisition of Sadra Medical Inc. In each case, the acquisition has the potential to open new markets for the cardio giants.

The manufacturer of computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and interventional cardiology products also received the award in 2003. On the heels of the announcement, the award-winning company also learned that as part of a restructuring plan at Bayer, it will likely have to lay off an unspecified number of employees by yearend.
