China takes "wait and see"
attitude?
|
Like many Chinese medical-device manufacturers, Mindray Medical
International had a long-term plan to penetrate the U.S. market. To
this end, the company, which makes products such as operating tables and
patient-monitoring machines, recently bought Datascope, a U.S. company
with a good brand name and a well-structured distribution channel.
Ironically, Mindray now finds it might be better-off sticking with the
Chinese market, at least for now, says an online article at Forbes.com.
Why? The Chinese government has pleged billions of dollars to upgrade
health care in rural areas, while the U.S. is trying to cut healthcare
costs. Mindray's strategy is probably that of watching the recession
while continuing to work with global partners, waiting for the right
jī huì (opportunity). Also see

The initial design phase of a medical-device project doesn't
effectively determine functions and features unless careful attention is
paid to identifying optimum materials for the application. Without that,
the design may take longer and prove more costly as it travels the path
from concept to functional molded part.

Apple Rubber offers expanded line of
medical-grade elastomer seals and O-rings.
In addition to popular
Silicone, Apple Rubber now offers custom O-rings and seals made from
medical-grade elastomers such as Viton® fluoroelastomer (FKM) and
EPDM rubber. Ideal for medical applications, such elastomers feature
improved chemical resistors, excellent heat resistance
(400°F/200°C), and low permeability to gases. Capabilities at
Apple Rubber include complete engineering support, manufacturing,
quality assurance and a Class 10,000 ISO Class 7, certified
cleanroom.

Hospitals are known for being safe and orderly, but this isn't
always the case when it comes to their radio frequency (RF) systems.
Unfortunately, stray signals can cause problems for many devices such as
MRIs, telemetry devices, and ultrasound instruments.

Coatings for enhancing the performance of medical devices continue
to be an area of intense research. New flow control technologies are
improving the production process, especially in the area of liquid spray
coating technology. Improved coating uniformity and part-to-part
repeatability are benefits of using this technology. If direct liquid
coating cannot be applied, new vaporization technology is available,
which can generate controlled vapor flow for precision coating
applications.

The EVOS fl digital imaging system from AMG - Westover
Scientific includes a microscope, high-resolution digital camera,
and an LCD. An LED-based "light cube" combines an illumination source,
light engine, and fluorescence filters into a single compact unit,
eliminating the need for users to align or calibrate the device. Users
can adjust the LEDs, reducing the chance of photobleaching or
phototoxicity. The EVOS fl includes an embedded microprocessor, giving
users full control of image acquisition and management without the need
for an external computer.

The four-axis Microgage Receiver from Pinpoint Laser Systems Inc.
is for correcting machinery-alignment problems. It measures two
linear axes, X and Y, and their angular components, yaw
and pitch. The linear axes show how well machinery is aligned along a
centerline while angular readouts show if there are parallelism
problems. The unit suits the aligning of lathes, turning centers, and
spindles, as well as linear slides, rams and pistons, and injection
molding machinery. A compact, digital display provides readings and is
easy and intuitive to use.

KYDEX FST thermoplastic from KYDEX LLC is now available in
sheets with a low-gloss finish or integrally colored metallic, or as an
injection-molding resin. The material has built-in antimicrobial
protection that won’t wash or wear away. This helps keep the surface
cleaner and inhibits the growth of bacteria that can cause stains,
odors, and product deterioration.
