Great potential demands great
responsibility
|
A reader sends interesting feedback on "China takes "wait and see" attitude?," published in
the July 21 issue of this newsletter. Matt Kopecky, Director of Sales
Support, Asia-Pacific, Sparta Systems says:
"The Mindray Medical International example underscores a fact
that many enterprising U.S.-based med device companies are waking up to
— that this is a market rife with possibilities for growth.
Enormous opportunity exists in the Asia-Pacific region for device
companies, and there are dollars to be had for anyone in established
markets looking to expand their global footprint.
But with the potential for global growth comes great responsibility
— companies simply cannot let product quality fall by the wayside
as they look to expand their operations to countries where they see
opportunity. The expansion to China will only make it more difficult
for those without a foothold in the region to both manage their global
processes and comply with international regulations. Issues like
differing standards for managing supplier quality, varying governmental
regulations for product approval, and different languages may end up
costing companies more than they’re prepared to invest and poised to
earn.
Sparta Systems recently launched operations in the Asia-Pacific
region because we saw an opportunity to help those looking to expand
while harmonizing processes as new operations are opened. Regardless of
where they extend, companies have a responsibility to their customers to
continue manufacturing products of the utmost quality and which
ultimately benefit the consumer. This sentiment must remain foremost in
companies’ thoughts as they expand operations in the APAC
region."

Hospitals are known for being safe and orderly, but this isn't
always the case when it comes to their radio frequency (RF) systems.
Unfortunately, stray signals can cause problems for many devices such as
MRIs, telemetry devices, and ultrasound instruments.

The initial design phase of a medical-device project doesn't
effectively determine functions and features unless careful attention is
paid to identifying optimum materials for the application. Without that,
the design may take longer and prove more costly as it travels the path
from concept to functional molded part.

Coatings for enhancing the performance of medical devices continue
to be an area of intense research. New flow control technologies are
improving the production process, especially in the area of liquid spray
coating technology. Improved coating uniformity and part-to-part
repeatability are benefits of using this technology. If direct liquid
coating cannot be applied, new vaporization technology is available,
which can generate controlled vapor flow for precision coating
applications.
