The global stage: Medical manufacturing in China

China will likely reach its goal of becoming a major player in the global medical manufacturing market if the recent China International Medical Equipment Fair (CMEF) is any indication. Exhibitors at CMEF, which was co-located with the International Component Manufacturing & Design Show at the Schenzen Convention & Exhibition Center, featured companies from all over the world with products and services for the entire medical supply chain, from concept and design to manufacturing and distribution. Many Chinese exhibitors said they are aggressively targeting Arab, Asian, European, Eastern European, and North and South American as well as local markets. Several exhibitors noted a big spike in the number of international attendees compared to the past. The largest event of its kind in Asia, the 61st CMEF show featured 2,100 exhibitors and attracted over 50,000 visitors. Following is a brief sampling of exhibitors. Full Article

Putting the rapid into injection molding
Building prototypes with additive methods such as sterolithography and fused deposition modeling has been a hot topic lately and rightly so. But for parts that will eventually be injection molded, industry experts say it makes more sense to get injection molded prototypes. Trouble is, traditional tooling costs a lot, has long lead times, and is difficult to change.

Capabilities at Apple Rubber include complete engineering support, manufacturing, quality assurance and a Class 10,000 ISO Class 7, certified cleanroom.

Surface treatments for wettability and stickability
Advanced surface treatment techniques such as air plasma, flame plasma, and chemical plasma discharges are playing key roles in the design and development of medical devices comprised of such polymers as high molecular weight polyethylene. These techniques will alter the first few atomic layers of the polymer to render surfaces wettable so that adhesive bonding can be achieved to troublesome materials such as polyolefins, silicones, and fluoropolymers.

Working with foreign patent preparers can be trouble
Officials at the U.S. Patent and Technology Office (USPTO) recently began reminding the domestic patent community that foreign filing licenses do not let applicants outsource the preparation of U.S. patent applications to overseas firms. The USPTO emphasized that foreign filing license only lets the applicant file already completed patent applications in foreign patent offices, and that's only after the U.S.-filed application clears a national security review. Foreign filing licenses do not let inventors, companies or individuals send technical data overseas for firms to prepare a USPTO patent applications.

Despite budget cuts, R&D spending on the rise at many firms
The economic downturn has Minnesota companies trimming their budgets, but many are leaving one line item intact: research-and-development spending. Nerve stimulation may help with bladder control
Implantable stimulators that provide continuous electrical stimulation to the nerves in and around the bladder can benefit carefully selected patients with difficult-to-control bladder control problems, the results of a literature review suggest. Careful follow-up, however, is critical because a high percentage of patients will develop complications and may even require a second operation, according to the report in the The Cochrane Library, a publication of the Cochrane Collaboration, which evaluates medical research.
