For many blind or partially sighted people, implants that stimulate
healthy nerve cells still connected to their retinas could help restore
some normal vision. Researchers have been working on such implants since
the 1980s with limited success. A major hurdle has been making an
implant that can stay in the eye for years without declining in
performance or causing inflammation.

Microfluidic chips, devices for testing water quality and
identifying pathogens, now can be made using paper, ink, and sunlight.
Conventional microfluidic chips are blocks of glass or plastic
containing labyrinths of tiny channels no more than a few hundred
micrometers wide. These channels manipulate fluids with great precision
because capillary forces draw liquid through them without turbulence.
The chips offer a way to shrink and streamline lab procedures such as, a
test for spotting the DNA of bacterial diseases. The task previously
took a few steps. Several solutions can be loaded into one chip, and the
results read soon after.

For a patient with end-stage heart failure, an implantable pump that
helps circulate the blood can mean added months or even years of life.
Now CircuLite, Saddle Brook, N.J., circulite.net is
developing an implantable pump that weighs just one-sixth as much as its
smallest predecessor. About the size of an AA battery, it ultimately
could be implanted through a catheterization procedure that is far less
invasive than the operations used to place today's pumps. It could thus
be used to treat patients in earlier stages of heart failure, for whom
implantation surgery had previously been too risky.

Medical Test Connectors
FasTest has the smallest connector
available for medical device leak test applications. The new ME001 style
connector quickly connects to ultra thin hypodermic or catheter
tubing.
Capable of sealing down to 0.015" OD, the ME001 connector is designed
for leak testing infusion set and drug delivery devices. The compact
0.84" OD easily mounts in limited space locations. The pneumatic
actuation is ideal for soft touch control of delicate components or
automation for ergonomics or high production testing.

Doctors have long sought better ways to examine the workings of the
human body without having to cut patients open. A swallowable camera,
little bigger than a normal pill, can already snap pictures as it floats
through the stomach and intestine, offering a less invasive way to
diagnose ailments than would an endoscope or surgery. A consortium of
European researchers is now testing a way to connect several swallowable
devices to create a surgical "robot" that would self-assemble inside the
stomach.

Bioconnect uses Santoprene as a primary molding material and outer
insulation in all its standard ECG products. Santoprene, a
thermal-plastic compound, is processed in much the same way as any
plastic. The difference is that Santoprene possesses the same levels of
flexibility and durability commonly found with natural rubber compounds.
The material is latex free and hypoallergenic to patients. It is
abrasion resistant and does not get slippery when exposed to many
fluids. The material is also impervious to most solvents that would be
commonly used in the hospital, clinic and emergency medicine
environments.
