MED_Medical Edge_: FEA describes forces to focus prosthetic lens

October 15, 2008

Bad news for tumors and a headache for regulators
Recent cancer therapies may give regulators headaches trying to figure out to approve it because the technology is so new. Is it a device or is it part pharmaceutical because something is injected? The “device” was described in presentation at a recent Comsol FEA conference and showed how fast technology is changing and how devices can do the work of some pharmaceuticals.

FEA describes forces to focus prosthetic lens
A prosthetic adjustable replacement lens, an alternative to cataract surgery, attaches to the eye’s focusing muscles to let patients see clearly and focus on near and far images. The lens is said to work well because it mimics the mechanics of a human lens. Patients are able to receive clear vision with the ability to focus on objects up close and far away.

Smart counter also identifies cells in sample
Clinical tests that identify and count normal and bacterial cells in blood and other samples can tell investigators the source of a bacterial infection or help monitor the immune health of people with HIV. A simple, lensless imaging system for doing so is in development by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles. It uses a light-sensing processor, similar to ones in digital cameras, to count and quickly identify different cell types in blood and drinking water. Simple algorithms then identify and count the cells.

White Paper: Transformer Design for Defibrillator Charging Capacitors

Generating high voltage by means of flyback topology is a common approach. Using the generated voltage to charge a capacitor for a high energy pulse is useful in the design of defibrillators. The procedure outlined in this paper is useful in the initial transformer design phase for charging a capacitor in a stated time. It eliminates "cut and try" or over-design approaches. Synthetic sniffer may smell cancer
An odor detector that sniffs for ammonia leaks on the space shuttle could work as a detector for compounds produced by cancer cells. The detector monitors electrical conductivities of polymer films that change in the presence of different substances. In tests, the ENose from NASA correctly diagnosed lung cancer and diabetes in patients who breathed into it, says developer Babak Kateb of City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, Calif. He and colleagues believe the device could be linked to other brain imaging and mapping equipment to create a high-resolution brain image to pinpoint cancer.
