The recent online posting of the business ties of doctors at the Cleveland Clinic is believed to be the first such comprehensive public disclosure.
While patients can now see if their doctors are getting money from pharmaceutical companies and medical device firms, Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove says it’s important to understand that the work physicians do with such companies is necessary in response to limited government spending on the medical research needed to develop new treatments. "We need to interact with companies because we need their products, and we need them to continually improve," says Cosgrove.

Sixty-eight percent of technology companies faced at least one new lawsuit this past year, with 30% having faced six or more. And 29% of the technology companies surveyed reported facing at least one $20 million action. This, according to the "U.S. Litigation Trends" survey by the law firm Fulbright & Jaworski LLP.

Implanting a medical IC just under the skin would let it measure blood chemicals and release drugs based on what it senses. Such a chip has potential to become an artificial pancreas and a treatment for Type I diabetes. Microchips Inc. Bedford, Mass., will perform clinical trials in 2009 on the glucose-detecting microchip, a device that has shown positive results in animal studies.
