I'm very excited to announce the launch of our redesigned site at medicaldesign.com. The site includes a whitepaper
section, webcast archive, and the latest medical device news.
In this issue of the Medical Edge we look at leak testers, NEMA
enclosures, and put a spotlight on new hardware and accessory products.

Top 5 pitfalls in selecting NEMA
enclosures
|
It's tough enough getting electrical components, board design, and
programming to finish in a well-timed sequence. It's worse when
designers select enclosures as after thoughts. These are serious errors
because engineers assume enclosures are low-tech items and most any will
do. Such last minutes decisions lead designers to five frequent
pitfalls.

Virtual micromixer helps create labs on a
chip
|
A new kind of micro-scale mixing device based on ferrohydrodynamic
actuation speeds the mass transport of fluids. The device manipulates
ferrofluid streams (stable water suspensions of magnetic particles which
can be made biocompatible) with local alternating magnetic fields. This
rapid mixing overcomes diffusion barriers. Comsol Multiphysics software
simulations provide virtual prototypes of the mixing device by
incorporating different physical domains including time-domain
electromagnetics, fluid dynamics, convective diffusion, and custom
partial differential equations. Once the optimal device geometries and
operating conditions are determined from simulations, physical
prototypes are made with standard microfabrication and simple soft
lithography techniques that allow rapid testing with microfluidic
channels. The combination of virtual and physical prototyping provides
significant cost and time reductions.

Getting the right leak detector
|
Leak testing can be a great investment, especially for companies
making healthcare devices. They know that a single component failure can
come back to haunt them in the form of expensive liability claims.
Because there is a wide variety of testers available, these few tips
will help find the right one. That means test engineers increase the
odds that leak testing will catch defects and that testing won't become
a production bottleneck.

Fastening guide profiles hardware and
installation
|
The 12-page Product Guide and Index to Bulletins is a quick and easy
reference for fastener products and installation equipment. The guide
describes the complete product line and includes descriptions and photos
of more than 75 fastener types. Penn Engineering's Quick Product
Locator identifies each fastener and a bulletin with more detailed
product information. The index is color-coded to match the catalog tabs.

Epoxy preforms for high-volume sealing
|
Uni-form epoxy preforms are an alternative to liquid epoxy for
high-volume, high-quality sealing tasks. The one-part epoxy resins from
Multi-Seals Inc. are solid at room temperature, but melt and cure
when heated, forming a consistent seal that protects components from
dust, moisture, oil, flux, solvents, conformal coatings, and other
contaminants.

Delivery cart for narrow aisles
|
A small-parts delivery cart from Kinetic Technologies Inc.
comes with two adjustable 34 x 54-in. shelf rails with removable deck
halves and 2,000 lb. rated load capacity for varying package heights and
weights. A MPP (modified pivot point) 6-wheel system (4-wheels down,
2-wheels up) delivers low manual push/pull forces at full load, with an
ability to track/turn long trains of carts in narrow aisles.

Snap-in cordgrips relieve cord and cable
strain
|
Snap-In Cordgrips from Heyco are suited for applications that
use a flexible power cord in a non-liquid tight environment or where
short assembly time is important. The cordgrips are easy to install:
fingers on the end of the cordgrip securely lock into the cabinet or
product housing without tools.

Thin-film generator turns waste heat to
power
|
A small, thin-film thermoelectric generator (TEG) converts heat into
electricity. Developer Nextreme says the film is ideal for making
use of waste heat. The solid-state TEG delivers power generation
densities of over 3W/cm2, more than bulk materials and provides power in
a form factor that can be as little as 5% the thickness of bulk-material
alternatives. The device generates electricity by the Seebeck Effect, in
which electricity is produced from a temperature differential. The
temperature difference between hot and cold sources leads to a
difference in the Fermi energy across the thermoelectric material and
yields a potential difference, which drives a current.
