Last week Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John McCain were invited by a bipartisan group of Nobel laureates to participate in a televised science debate. All three candidates declined.

California Institute of Technology professors David Baltimore and Ahmed Zewail say "ScienceDebate 2008 was an opportunity to tell voters how they would ensure America continues to dominate the sciences. A complete overhaul of national science policy is needed to prepare the U.S. for a future rapidly overtaking us. Our presidential hopefuls should be telling us their positions on critical science issues, but they have not done so yet."

Switchmode power supplies meet EMC demands and more
When designing electronic equipment, a consideration for safety takes precedence over all others. This concern is just as important in industrial equipment as it is in medical applications. It might be tempting to think that power supplies which have been safe in industrial applications would be equally suitable for use in medical equipment. This is not always the case because the risks are different. Furthermore, much of the electronic equipment used in hospitals, such as patient monitors, operate with low-level signals making them more sensitive to electromagnetic interference than industrial versions. Consequently, electromagnetic compatibility, EMC, becomes a key concern in medical applications.

Apple Rubber offers expanded line of medical-grade elastomer seals and O-rings.

In addition to popular Silicone, Apple Rubber now offers custom O-rings and seals made from medical-grade elastomers such as Viton® fluoroelastomer (FKM) and EPDM rubber. Ideal for medical applications, such elastomers feature improved chemical resistors, excellent heat resistance (400°F/200°C), and low permeability to gases. Capabilities at Apple Rubber include complete engineering support, manufacturing, quality assurance and a Class 10,000 ISO Class 7, certified cleanroom.

Small machines for small parts
Like its macro counterpart, mechanical micromachining uses a rotating cutting tool to remove material in the form of chips. However, extensive research shows that micromachining works differently than conventional machining. Cutting mechanics (the way a tool interacts with the material) and process parameters (feeds and speeds) do not translate directly from the macro world to the micro.

Elastomer allows welding clear tubes
A maker of weldable tubing says it can now join clear tubes without compromising strength. Sure Bond tubing is a three-layer coextruded tube with a polyethylene inner layer to prevent absorption, a proprietary middle layer for adhesion, and an outer elastomer layer for bonding. The elastomer, Ecdel, is an orthophthalate-free copolyester said to offer the clarity, toughness, flexibility, and chemical and heat resistance needed in crucial medical applications. Ecdel elastomer also withstands EtO and gamma sterilization without the yellowing associated with PVC.

Smaller proton accelerator zaps tumors
One way to treat cancer with minimal damage to healthy tissue is to zap tumors with a proton beam. Proton therapy systems have been around since the 1950s. But until now, the units were as big as entire hospitals with costs over $100 million. That typically makes proton therapy unavailable to most cancer centers and patients. However, Still River Systems is developing a compact and cost-effective proton therapy system, the Monarch250.

Packaging ideas for medical-device kits
Recent developments boost productivity and make medical products more traceable with print-n-pack systems that combine printing, bar coding, and packaging. For instance, relatively new bag-on-a-roll products are a way to streamline packaging operations especially when they involve medical-device kits with components that must be accurately packaged and include traceability. To select the best packaging equipment for your operation, consider these five packaging elements.
