    Medtech for endangered apes

    The world’s population of mountain and Grauer’s gorillas -- both found in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, may be fewer than 3,000 according to some estimates. At nearly 6-ft tall and weighing over 400 lb., these creatures are hard to miss, but they will be missed if their populations aren’t sustained. With that in mind I was pleased to receive an unusual press release the other day about an ultrasound system donated by Toshiba Medical to help save the lives of injured and ill mountain and Grauer’s gorillas as part of the Gorilla Doctors project. The organization was founded in 1986 to treat wild gorillas, rescue orphaned gorillas, conduct gorilla disease research, and facilitate preventive healthcare for national park workers who come into close contact with gorillas....More
